During his 40 years of ministry at Holyrood church in Edinburgh, James Philip (the father of our current minister) preached sermons and wrote Bible reading notes covering almost the whole Bible. These are still cherished and used by many people all over the world, especially ministers. Access the sermon archive and Bible Readings below. Genesis: Christian Beginnings, An Interview with the Author

William Philip, senior minister at the Tron Church in Glasgow, has recently completed his masterful commentary, Genesis: Christian Beginnings. William began his work on Genesis in 2010, and has since preached the entire book of Genesis twice to his congregation in Scotland.

Whilst this commentary is robustly academic and theologically profound, the pages never stray from being earnestly pastoral, providing heartfelt spiritual wisdom for those in the pulpit and pew. 

 

To celebrate the launch of the book (16/04/25), we caught up with William to find out more about the book of Genesis itself and to get a sense of what he hopes his commentary will deliver to those who delve into it.

“I know that God can save people, but he probably won’t”

This was a quote shared by Ray Galea at the recent Reach Australia Conference and it hit me between the eyes! I wonder if you share that view when it comes to God’s sovereignty and evangelism? Yes, of course God is sovereign in salvation, we think, he is God. But, in reality, I don’t really expect to see people becoming Christians in Glasgow in 2024. I know God can, but he probably won’t.

A Burden for the Lost

A question to ponder: what is the most significant factor influencing my eagerness to evangelise? To put the same question another way, what is the corollary to my stepping out in boldness and steering a conversation towards Jesus or issuing an invitation to church?

As I sat down to write and asked myself that question I anticipated some lengthy analysis and deep thought… but the answer was obvious and almost immediate! Prayer.

As it turns out, the best, most effective, evangelistic event is one that we are currently running 104 times a year. We do it twice, every week. It’s our Sunday services.

It is our aim that we will all be built up and strengthened in faith as we sing the truths of God's Word together as The Tron Church. In order that "the word of Christ [may] dwell in [us] richly" (Col. 3:16), we sing "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs" which are rooted in Scripture and help us to rightly respond to that Word. Our desire is to have these truths ringing in the ears and sounding forth from the mouths of everyone who comes amongst us, that our praise would resound in wholehearted thanksgiving to God.

Our minister, William Philip, has written some hymns which we regularly sing together as a congregation as part of our corporate worship. Recordings and lyrics are provided so that others might join in!
